Meet David, a local Police Officer who joined Bellum at a friend’s recommendation to try and find a workout program that would keep him accountable and interested. This golfing, craft beer loving, and soon to be DAD (!!!) has finally found a place where he’s staying consistent and seeing progress.

CrossFit has long been a highly regarded training program for law enforcement, military personnel, and first responders for its ability to prepare athletes for the unknown and unknowable. Yes, the agility, strength, and endurance gained through consistent training helps David be ready for whatever a day on the job throws at him, but the benefits of working out carry over into daily life as well!

Deadlifts will both help make his bones stronger AND help him safely get his baby’s carseat in and out of the backseat over the next few months. Burpees increase his aerobic capacity so that he can run faster and longer, AND will also help him chase after an active toddler in the coming years. Weight loss through eating healthy food and consistent training will keep his heart healthy and his blood pressure low so that he can be an active part of his family for a long, long time. Longevity is one of the greatest benefits of consistent exercise, and CrossFit is one of the greatest ways to achieve that goal.

David, we thank you for being such a positive part of our morning classes. We love helping you get fitter and stronger so that you can serve your family and community so well. Thank you for your daily service to others, and we are so excited to watch your family grow in the coming months!

What type of workouts did you perform before coming to Bellum?: When I used to go to the “normal” gym before Bellum, and I would do the same workouts over and over again.  I was not motivated at the time, so I would probably go once every other week. I would work on my arms and chest only and I barely warmed up before workouts.  I never did core work or any of the large muscle groups. That is definitely why I was never getting any stronger.

Why were you looking for a new style of workouts?:  I would go to the gym and would get distracted by my phone in between sets, so I would never break a sweat or raise my heart rate.  When I was feeling motivated, I would make myself do some cardio before my workout. I would get on the treadmill and be bored in 5 minutes, and that would end my cardio.  Then, I would move onto weights with no plan or idea what I needed to work on or how to correctly do the workouts. With me getting older, I saw my weight growing as well, so I knew I needed to change something.  I have friends that went to Bellum and I figured those types of workouts would benefit me, and remove my ability to be unmotivated. I pulled the trigger and met with Coach Erin at my No Sweat Intro, and I’ve loved it ever since.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement or workout?: With me being a morning person, sometimes we don’t get to do a strength portion of the workout.  I always enjoy when we have a full day of all strength work. As far as individual movements go, I would say my favorite is the sumo deadlift.  Before Bellum, I had never done a deadlift, so it was always very new for me anytime we did the deadlifts and most other movements. The reason I like sumo the best is that I am more comfortable with my legs wider making it easier for me get my knees out of the way.

What is your biggest accomplishment since starting at Bellum?: I think my biggest accomplishment would be actually joining and sticking with the gym.  Bellum is exactly what I needed to get myself healthier and I am extremely happy that I decided to join Bellum instead of sticking with the other gym and not getting anything out of it.  I feel accomplished for doing that because I have been a member of a gym for about 15 years, but I have never benefited from it until I joined Bellum.

You’re getting close to your 1 year anniversary with Bellum, congratulations! How would you say your life has changed since you started with us 10 months ago?: Thank you. It has been a great year at the gym. My life has been a roller coaster in the last 10 months.  My wife and I found out we were pregnant in September! And after losing twins at 9 weeks in February 2019, we are extremely excited to meet our baby girl.  Most of my day is spent thinking about how my life will change in the next few months, and I could not be more excited for it.

What made you choose Bellum and CrossFit, as opposed to other styles of workouts?: I knew I had to change my workout routine, and I don’t trust myself to do it on my own.  I knew a little about CrossFit. I knew it was a great workout that was already planned for you but still had options to change it to be personal to you. I also knew some people who were members at Bellum.  They always spoke about how great it was and how wonderful everyone is. There are a lot of gyms in the area, but I am 100% sure I chose the best one for me. Although it doesn’t appear this way during the workouts, I love coming to the gym.  I feel great when I leave, and I love seeing the coaches and other members.

What is your favorite out-of-the-gym activity?: When I am not at the gym or working I enjoy playing golf in my free time.  I play as often as I can, and I usually try to play while i’m on vacation to check out new courses.  I also like to go to breweries, although I wish my wife liked beer so I could drag her along. I also enjoy just sitting on the couch with my wife and 3 dogs.  Soon, my out of the gym activities will be changing diapers and not sleeping.

What’s your “Why”?: My why started out as being healthier so I am able to handle myself at work, but now it leans more towards being healthier so I can be around my family for as long as possible.
