Cpl. Marc T. Ryan

This time last year, I opened up my Bellum e-mail account and saw a message from Chris Ryan. Going to Gloucester High, the last name Ryan is a name that you will never forget. I immediately got memories of the day in 2004 when we received the tragic news that one of Gloucester High’s very own was taken too soon. Corporal Marc T. Ryan, a weapons specialist in the United States Marine Corps, lost his life in the line of duty.

Once I opened the e-mail, I realized that Chris was in fact Marc Ryan’s brother. Chris was letting us know about a Hero Workout for Marc. Although I did not know Marc personally, the community did a great job of keeping his spirit alive. His family, friends, teammates, teachers, and every resident of Gloucester City rallied together to make sure that everyone was lucky enough to know Marc’s story and hear of his courage. It is an honor to host an event in his memory.

I am often reminded of Marc at the gym. Our Bellum athletes come in wearing shirts with the number 19 across their back. Nineteen is the number Marc wore proudly on his jersey as an all-star football player and all-around great guy. His name is also brought up quite often in conversation whenever Gloucester High football is the topic of discussion. Marc remains alive in the hearts of all Gloucester residents.

Corporal Marc T. Ryan is a true hero. He has left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him, and those who still get to know him through stories and memories. He is gone, but not forgotten. Please join us as we host our second annual Hero Workout “Marco.” We will also be hanging a flag in Cpl. Ryan’s honor that has been given to Bellum from his family. Come workout with us, or just come out and support. Everyone is welcome whether you have CrossFit experience or not. We will be collecting $5.00 donations to go towards the Corporal Marc T. Ryan Scholarship Fund. We will also be collecting requested items on the donation list for Soldiers to Civilians. Please e-mail us at bellumstrength@gmail.com if you have any questions.
